Perspective. the art of representing a three dimensional object on a two dimensional surface, so as to give the correct impression of the height, width, depth and position in relation to each other. Now read that again!
What does perspective mean to you? Of course, the above is just a loose definition and perspective can be a very relative term. But if we look at the facts, then perspective is scientific. Looking at the term more loosely and an individuals perspective could be anything; and that perspective can be changed.
How do you see the world? is the sky light blue or dark blue, what does the rain smell like? what shade of green is the grass and what temperature is the water? according to the cambridge dictionary perspective is a particular way of considering something, or to think about a situation or problem in a wise and reasonable way.
I think it is very interesting that the way we approach perspective on life, differs dramatically from the approach we take on ourselves. When considering lifestyle and situations that we are presented with, we take the latter option, in that we consider our options, we think about situations or issues and we rationalize them in a wise and reasonable way, whereas when looking at ourselves, so many of us get caught up in the aesthetics, ie; our impression of height, width, depth and positioning. This is when these perspectives merge. Our conscious can see the facts, we can see what we look like, how tall we are, how wide we are, our shape, our size. But the subconscious will then use our inner judgement and create this ideal image based on all the other information that we are presented with. This image can be completely made up.
Walk into a newsagent and pick up a magazine, something like Women’s or Men’s health, Women’s Day, Natural Health, any one of the hundreds of trashy celeb magazines. What do you see? We are inundated with what society is telling us is a desirable body, then when that perfect figure has a picture taken from different angle, they are either depressed, fat or pregnant! WTF.
We are plastered with what is deemed to be perfect, what is socially acceptable and our social media accounts are judged by photo filters and so much falsified imagery that our grasp on reality is becoming less and less.
Guess what? everyone has rolls when they bend over, everyone has breath that could kill a goat when they wake up in the morning and everyone is unique. Not one physical body is the same. There is no one size fits all approach. We all want to be stick thin, we all want to be desirable, but when we are constantly comparing ourselves to what is “believed” to be ideal, we are losing our perspective, both on ourselves and on life.
The reality is; nothing is perfect. What is perfect? Perfect IS in itself, simply somebody’s perspective and perspectives can be changed. So when it comes to gaining a little, look at what is really important. What is it that really matters? Is it that you are healthy and pain free or that your belly jiggles more than you would like? Does it matter if you are a size 10 and enjoy going out for a meal or two rather than starving yourself to be a size 4?
Who are you really trying to impress? because let’s face it, do you think that the love of your life is going to love you because you would look good on the cover of a magazine? No. The love of your life will fall in love with you because of all the little things that make you, YOU. Your successes, your failures your quirky sense of humour. The scars on your knees from when you were playing as a kid. the reasons why you believe in magic, the little things that make you giggle and the dreams you have at night, the late night conversations that you have and all the little things in between… This is what matters….
” Fake is the new real and I don’t fit in” (the minds journal)
It takes a lot of courage to be yourself in a world that is screaming at you to be somebody else. So be that person, have the courage to just be you…. It is so easy to lose yourself in this world of social media, but when did you ever meet someone who’s life was as glamorous as what it is on instagram? Even if you did, they wouldn’t be plaguing social media they would be too busy living it.
Want to gain perspective, take a walk in the sunshine, breath in deeply, feel the warmth of the sun on your skin and the breeze through your hair. That is real, the way you feel right now, this is what it is all about. Rather than wallowing in self pity and feeling like shit, get the courage to do something about it. Get a little perspective, what is it that makes you feel good? What do you enjoy? make a little time every day to do that. It is so important, work hard but don’t forget to work hard on yourself, for yourself.
Perspective is a powerful thing, maybe it’s time to shift it….
