How old were you when you lost your innocence, your imagination and your need to create magic everywhere you go? Okay, you get to an age when you begin to realize the truth about Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and you get that healthy dose of reality that comes with adulthood, but when was it that you really stop playing?
There are always moments that can take you by surprise, and at times the most simplistic things in the world are what make you feel something. I was walking down the street the other day and the base of a tree on the sidewalk had been transformed into a Fairy Garden and each time I pass there are new additions. What started with a door and some stones, has now grown. There is a butterfly, a birds nest, a jar of pixie dust and a fairy that appears on occasion. It was later that I discovered, what started as a small gesture for one young girl, turned into a street project that the residents of the local neighborhood have continued to add to. This was the feel good story of the week. It not only made one young girl incredibly happy but it also proves that there are still adults out there that haven’t lost touch with their inner child. In a society that is so fast paced, this little garden actually made me slow, I stopped and took the time to appreciate the moment. I guess you could say i really did stop and smell the roses. Who knows, maybe fairy’s do exist! Or maybe it was us all along.
Adults still need to play, think about it; what would your life be like if you were to remember what it’s like to get excited about the little things? Like going out for dinner, a night out with your friends or simply being able to enjoy a glass of wine while sitting on the couch. (completely guilt free that is). That excited little girl inside of me popped up and said hi the other day, then, she went back and hid because there was this big bad world out there and adult me wasn’t there to protect her or nurture her. What was fun when I was eight is clearly not going to fly know, so laugh often and teach her what is fun now. Introduce her to your friends and when you are too pre-occupied to get excited yourself, let her get excited for you. Allow her to influence you and give her permission to help you make decisions. Your intuition and gut feelings come from somewhere don’t they! so why can’t they come from a place of innocence. After all, I am still a firm believer that on certain days I am entitled to solve the days problems with the eenie minie moe method…
Happiness is the only thing that multiplies when you share it, and a smile really is contagious. So why not spread that shit. Wake up with a grateful thought and set yourself the goal of one act of kindness each day, just one. Who knows, that one act may have a flow on effect. That one smile, one kind word or one kind gesture could make someones day. If you can be anything in this world, be kind. Get Excited, go to the park and use the swings, kick a football, run around in circles until you can’t walk straight, but most of all, don’t be afraid to just BE YOU!
